Angel's story

Angel was adopted on April 12, 2003 . . . after meeting her and looking into her big brown soulful eyes, how could I not adopt her?  I had been looking for a Jindo to adopt for several months - I had bowls and blankets ready, tried to dog proofed the house, etc. - but was resigned to waiting several more months before the right dog came along.   Then Angel appeared on petfinder.com and I fell in love with her almost instantly.  Nichole, her foster mom, had taken a lot of care to describe what a wonderful dog Angel is and, quite honestly, I was a little skeptical that Angel (or any dog) could be so wonderful.

When I finally met Angel at the OC Pet Expo, she was everything I had hoped for and more.  Her incredibly sweet temperament and humble demeanor were apparent from the start.  Nichole and I walked her for a little bit at the Expo and Angel was alert and curious but always well-mannered and thoughtful in her actions.

The first few days that Angel spent with me were a little difficult for her.  She was understandably confused but her manners never suffered.  She obviously just wanted someone to love.  She NEVER chewed on anything that wasn't hers, did not jump on furniture or people and understood, without any instruction, her boundaries within the house.  All the dog proofing I did in the house were for not because she never tried to get into anything she wasn't suppose to be in.  She's always been the perfect lady, crossing her front paws when she's lying down and keeping herself clean and tidy.  (Okay, maybe not always, there was the time she snatched a turkey sandwich off my plate when I went out of the room for a few minutes.  Interestingly, when I returned to the room, she appeared to be in the exact same spot she was in when I left her. . . If I hadn't been positive that there was a turkey sandwich on that plate, I would have convinced myself that I had just forgotten that I had eaten it.)

Angel never asks for any attention but when I give it to her (especially if a belly rub is involved) she acts like there's no other place she would rather be.  She's become very protective of me and now she makes sure she's in the same room with me when other people are in the house.  I like to think she's keeping an eye on me and making sure I'm okay.

Recently, I accidentally discovered Angel's silly side . . . she'll hide an entire "Greenies" bone in her mouth and head for the yard so she can secretly bury it.  If, however, you happen to run into her before she gets to the doggie door, she does an abrupt about face, heads back to the living room, drops the bone on carpet and literally looks disappointed that her "secret mission" has been foiled.

It's been an incredible experience bonding with Angel and she's now comfortable enough to let the playful part of her personality show.  She becomes incredibly excited every morning and evening when she knows it's time for her walk - she even does a little dance by the front door.  On her walks, she enjoys hunting for rabbits, squirrels, lizards and mice.  She's quite the huntress. . . rather than running directly after her prey, Angel will try to head them off and when she's hunting in low lying shrubs, she'll shuffle her feet to encourage any prey that is playing dead to move.  Angel has proven to be an incredibly intelligent, adventurous and loyal girl.

All my concerns about adopting a dog, and a Jindo in particular, have flown out the window.  My biggest concern was the myth that Jindos only ever bond with their first owner.  Thankfully, in the short 4 months since I found her, Angel and I have bonded in a way that I have never thought possible, with any dog.  I couldn't ask for a more loyal and loving pet.

Angel possess the typical characteristics of the Jindo breed and for that I'm very thankful.  She gives so much and asks for so little in return.  She has brought only joy and happiness to my life and I'm grateful every day that we managed to find each other.
